Abstract

[Also in Division F4] Drying and filtering apparatus comprises a flat rectangular tray one wall of which is formed with ribs between which are disposed heating resistors, a second rectangular tray provided with an aperture for draining filtrate, and a filtering wall clamped between the two trays. The assembled trays include an aperture through which liquid is introduced and through which solid is removed. In operation, a liquidsolid mixture is admitted through aperture 2 formed between stainless-steel tray 3 and filtering wall 4, the assembly being vertically positioned. Filtered liquid passes through wall 4, which may be polytetrafluoroethylene fabric supported on a perforated plate, into stainlesssteel tray 2, to be discharged at 6. A groove, through which cooling air flows, may be formed in the flange forming the side of tray 2. The filtrate may be discharged by gravity or by suction. After the vacuum-drying the filter-cake, the assembly is tilted to a horizontal position by trunnions 17 so that the filter cake underlies the filtering wall 4. The cake is then calcined by heating resistors provided on the bottom of tray 3. Heat-insulating material may be provided round the trays, and vacuum is maintained during the calcination. When cool, the assembly is tilted a vertical position with aperture 9 at the bottom so that calcined solid may fall therethrough into a container attached to aperture 9 in an air-tight manner. The apparatus may be used for filtering and calcining ammonium di-uranate containing fissile material.
