Motor power plant; reversing. - A marine turbine installation comprising both ahead and astern elements is divided into separate sections, each capable of independent employment as an emergency unit for developing substantially full power. A high-pressure ahead turbine 4 of the impulse type is mounted in the same casing 9 as a high-pressure astern impulse turbine 6, and a low-pressure ahead reaction element 5 is mounted in the same casing 22 as a lowpressure astern impulse element 7. For ahead working, the motive fluid from an inlet 13 flows through the element 4, the pipe 15, inlet 16, and the element 5, to the condenser 24. Alternatively, the lowpressure element may be by-passed by manipulating the valves 30, 31, and the exhaust from the element 4 is led direct by the pipe 28 to the condenser. High-pressure motive fluid may be admitted direct to the element 5 by an inlet 35, the element 5 working independently or in parallel with the element 4. For astern working, the connexions of the astern elements 6, 7 may be varied in a similar manner. The turbine shafts 8, 26 drive the propeller shaft 40 through transmission gear 38, 39.
