In a mechanical seal comprising an annular housing shell 1 having a cylindrical cuff 2 and a radial wall 4 and a facesealing ring 5 which is urged axially away from the wall 4 by a spring 12, the ring 5 and shell 1 are interconnected by a bayonet-type joint such that relative rotation between the ring and the shell is prevented and relative axial movement is permitted, in the working setting of the joint, to a restricted extent to prevent separation of the ring from the shell and, in an alternative setting of the joint, to an unrestricted extent to allow such separation. A rubber sleeve 9 has radial end flanges 10 and 11 pressed by the spring 12 against the wall 4 and the face 7 of the ring 5 respectively. J-shaped recesses 14 in the inner surface 8 of the ring 5 include a longer limb 15 that extends to the face 7 and a shorter blind limb 16. During assembly of the shell 1 and ring 5, ribs 19 on the cuff 2 are pushed into the recesses 14 via the limbs 15 and by a slight twisting action are allowed to enter the blind limbs 16 under the action of spring 12 to thereby prevent axial separation of the ring from the shell.
