Abstract

1,018,467. Locking nuts. EATON MANUFACTURING CO. May 8, 1964 [May 29, 1963], No. 19344/64. Heading F2H. A nut and washer assembly comprises a nut 11 having a screwed bore 14 and a sink or recess 16 formed at one end thereof, the sink or recess having a sloping base 17 of conical shape and a well 22 adjacent the inner edge of the base 17 and surrounding the thread, a deformable insert 15 being located in the recess 16 and staked in place. The washer may be made of nylon and plasticized with ethylene glycol after being staked to the nut or the washer may be made of polyurethene or polyvinyl chloride. The base 17 of the recess 16 slopes at an angle of 45 degrees from the outer edge of the recess towards the thread of the nut whereas the corresponding bottom face of the insert slopes at an angle of 30 degrees or less or the end may be completely flat with respect to a plane perpendicular to the axis of the insert. The recess has a cylindrical surface 18 provided with serrations to grip the insert 15. The nut on being tightened on a screw 13 against a surface 12 causes the material of the washer to fill the well 22 and form a seal.
