Abstract

1,018,272. Electric selective signalling systems. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 21, 1962 [June 23, 1961], No. 22839/61. Heading G4H. A voltage digitizing system of the type in which an unknown voltage is first converted into a duration significant signal, by comparison with a linear time base, which is then digitized by counting clock-pulses, is characterized in that the system includes two comparators associated with positive-going and negative-going time base generators in order to be able to digitize unknown voltages of either polarity. As described, an unknown voltage is sampled, Fig. 1, stored on a capacitor and applied in dependance upon its sign to one of two comparators receiving positive and negative time bases. This produces a pulse of a corresponding duration which controls the flow of clock-pulses to a counter. If the sampled voltage is negative a " complement clamp" is also set so that when the counter is read out, by gates and appropriate delays, the serial-mode output is complemented and a sign pulse is inserted.
