Abstract

Linear polyborazolenes consisting of borazole rings directly connected from boron to nitrogen, those boron atoms which are not connected to another ring carrying R1R2N groups in which R1 and R2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl, are prepared by heating an appropriate B,B1, B11-tri (R1R2N-substituted) borazole at a temperature not exceeding 300 DEG C. to eliminate R1R2NH. Heating at a higher temperature in excess of 350 DEG C. leads to further elimination of R1R2NH and formation of a cross-linked, thermally stable polymer. The polymers may be formed by heating, for example, mixtures of di-s-butylamine with B,B1,B11 - trichloroborazole, or with B,B1,B11-tri (dimethylamino) borazole. In examples, polymers are produced by heating (1) B,B1,B11-tri (diethylamino) borazole first at 250 DEG -280 DEG C. and then at 400 DEG C.; (2) B,B1,B11-tri (di-iso-propylamino) borazole at 200-230 DEG C.; (3) B,B1,B11-tri (diphenylamino) borazole to about 500 DEG C.; (4) a viscous reaction product of di-s-butylamine and B,B1,B11-trichloroborazole at 300 DEG C.; (5) di-s-butylamine with B,B1,B11-tri (dimethylamino) borazole with removal of dimethylamine and di-s-butylamine. The polymers are useful as coating materials particularly for electrical insulation and when high-temperature resistance is needed. Films and mouldings of the polymer may be produced.
