Abstract

1,018,030. Moulding processes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC AND ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Sept. 8, 1964 [Sept. 11, 1963], No. 36738/64. Heading B3F. A moulding process comprises coating a pattern with a layer of a fine-grained refractory and a binder, applying a layer of coarse-grained refractory thereto while still wet, allowing the layers to dry, then wetting the dry coated pattern with a binder and arranging it in a mould box and packing with a granular refractory and allowing said second binder to solidify, then removing the pattern. The pattern may be coated with a release agent such as petroleum jelly or silicone grease. The first coating layer may be zirconium silicate, aluminium oxide or aluminium silicate, with a silicic acid sol as binder, applied as an ethanolic suspension and hardened by the action of ammonia, by spraying with e.g. an aqueous solution of ammonium acetate, or by heating. The coarse-grained refractory may be aluminium silicate. The second binder may be a silicic acid sol, albumins, sodium silicate solutions and methyl cellulose, and the back-up material may be moulding sand. A surface-active substance such as sodium dodecyl naphthyl sulphonate may be added to the binder to promote wetting of part of the backing material thereby. Solidification of the second binder may be initiated by adding a coagulating substance to the back-up refractory or to the binder.
