Abstract

1,018,001. Automatic circuit breakers; liquid blast switches. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 3, 1962 [Aug. 4, 1961], No. 28395/61. Heading H2B. In a circuit breaker having contact rod 18, Fig. 1 (not shown), immersed in an insulating liquid in a chamber 10, the static pressure of the liquid is increased during contact opening by a piston 6, a valve 11 being provided between the chamber 10 and an overflow space 23 to close an outlet when the pressure exceeds a preset value and a relief valve 12 preventing excessive pressures. Contact rod 18 is moved to the open position by a linkage 17 under the action of a spring 16 when a latch 14 releases a lever 44 for pivotal movement. Latch 14 is removed by energizing a solenoid 31. At the same time another solenoid 30 operates a valve 61 to supply compressed air of a reservoir 4 to a cylinder 5 which is linked to piston 6 to pressurize the oil in chamber 10. The breaker is reclosed by energizing a third solenoid 46 which through a lever 24 operates a valve 60 to supply air from reservoir 4 to cylinder 27 moving a piston 45 to pivot lever 44. The pivot of lever 24 comprises a member 28 removable by the solenoid 31 so that solenoid 46 is ineffective to close the breaker while the solenoids 31, 30 are energized. The latter may be energized either through a manual switch 32 or through a protective relay. In a modification solenoid 30 is omitted, the valve 61 being actuated mechanically by the link 44. In another modification valve 12 is placed on the wall of chamber 10, the space 9 being divided by a partition so that oil directly surrounding the chamber 10 is not pressurized by the piston 6.
