Abstract

1,017,910. Combustion apparatus. HEINRICH KOPPERS G.m.b.H. Aug. 24, 1964 [Aug. 27, 1963], No. 34522/64. Heading F4T. A combustion device for a single-chamber tower-like gas or air heater (e.g. a Cowper stove) is disposed in the base of a combustion chamber 6 and has lean gas channels 12 and air channels 13 alternately disposed in a ring around a concentric air channel 16 into which flame core extends a removable concentric fuel pipe 17 which delivers rich gas or oil into the chamber 6. The rich gas or oil is supplied to the pipe 17 through a line 19; and if oil is used as the fuel, atomising water vapour or compressed air is supplied to the pipe 17 through a line 20. Air for combustion of the lean gas is supplied to the air channels 13 through radial branches 27 from an annular chamber 22 connected to an air line 25. Air for combustion of the atomised oil or rich gas is supplied to the concentric air channel 16 through radial branches 28 from an annular chamber 23 connected to an air line 26. The lean gas is supplied to the channels 12 from an annular chamber 29 connected to a line 32. The supply of air to the channels 13, of lean gas to the channels 12, and of air to the concentric channel 16 is regulable by control flaps or valves 33, 40, 34, respectively, operable through closable apertures 35, 37, 36, respectively. The ends of the branches 28 of the concentric channel 16 are directed tangentially, and vanes are disposed at the ends of the branches, to provide variable whirling motion to the air passing through the channel 16. The channels 12, 13 are bounded by walls 56, Fig. 6 (not shown), which terminate below the base 11 of the combustion chamber 6, webs 58 extending into the channels 12, 13 to form mixing nozzles 14. In another embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the lean gas and air channels are inclined upwards and inwards so that the emergent gas streams form a conical core, and are supplied with lean gas and air from a lower and an upper annular channel via horizontal radial channels. Each annular channel is supplied by a pipe having a stop valve. Air is supplied into the side of the base of the concentric channel. The fuel tube is located at its upper end by a ceramic ring member closing the concentric channel but having swirling apertures formed therein. The lean gas and air channels enter the combustion chamber tangentially so that the emergent gases form a swirling cone. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the combustion device is disposed under a cupola horizontally connected to a store cupola at the top of a checkerwork heat exchanger which is heated by hot waste gases from the combustion device. Air or wind for a blast furnace is fed in at the base of the heat exchanger and removed through an outlet above the combustion device.
