Abstract

1,017,637. Separating gases by liquefication and diffusion. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Sept. 25, 1963 [Sept. 25, 1962], No. 37787/63. Heading B1L. Gas mixture containing a condensable gas and a less-condensable impurity, are separated by compressing and cooling to remove the condensable gas, the gaseous phase rich in impurities remaining is then subjected to a diffusion process to remove the impurities. In an apparatus for carrying out the process of the invention gas is compressed at 1, cooled at 2 and the liquid phase withdrawn at 4 from reservoir 3. The vapour from the reservoir is fed into a diffusion cascade system at 6. If the impurities have low molecular weight, then they are withdrawn at 8 whilst the heavy fraction is withdrawn at 9 and may either be returned to the compressor 1 or the liquid phase at 4 according to the purity of the effluent. The pressure in the reservoir 3 and the cascade are controlled by stabilizers 11 and 18 with associated valves 10 and 17 respectively. The gaseous mixture at 6 is compressed at 13 before going to diffusion chamber 14 which is divided into two parts by the membrane 15. The compressors of the cascade may be centrifugal. The purification of a mixture of UCl 6 , ClF 3 and N 2 is referred to.
