A method of converting a continuous length of cellulose triacetate plastic sheet material into two or more continuous narrower strips comprises forming at one end of the material short lengths of the narrower strips and then pulling the strips forward in different directions so as to tear the material while maintaining substantially stationary in space the point or points where the material separates into narrower strips. As shown, plastic sheet material 10 is passed over a roller 20 to a severance point 12 and the tearing of the material is carried out by pulling the edge trim 14 over a roller 18 so that it follows a path inclined to that followed by the trimmed stock 16. A tear block 22 mounted on a shaft 24 assists in avoiding lateral displacement of the point 12 and a pressure pin 25 assists in maintaining the edge trim 14 in the desired position. A roller similar to the roller 18 may be provided to engage the trim from the opposite edge of the film. To ensure that the or each tear follows a straight line, the untorn sheet material can be provided initially with a straight guide line which is conveniently a groove in a knurled edge 28.
