Abstract

Semi-drying or non-drying fatty acid and/or oil modified alkyd resins are copolymerized with one or more vinyl or vinylidene monomers while adding a polybasic unsaturated acid in solution form to the copolymerization mixture. The polybasic unsaturated acid may be solubilized in the vinyl or vinylidene monomer or in a solvent or mixture of solvents. Once the modified alkyd resin has been prepared, the monomer and the polybasic unsaturated acid may be jointly fed to the mixture or a portion of the acid (in solvent) may be added before the addition of the monomer commences. In the examples:-(1) an alkyd made from tall oil fatty acid, pentaerythritol, ethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride in the presence of xylol is copolymerized with methylmethacrylate by adding a solution of the latter with maleic anhydride and tert.-butylperoxide; (2) an alkyd formed from soybean oil, pentaerythritol glycerin and phthalic anhydride is copolymerized with styrene and methylmethacrylate in the presence of maleic anhydride; (3) an alkyd formed from coconut oil, glycerin and phthalic anhydride is copolymerized with methyl methacrylate and styrene in the presence of maleic anhydride.
