Abstract
1,017,361. Weighing apparatus. ATLAS BOLT & SCREW CO. Jan. 29, 1963 [Feb. 23, 1962], No. 3563/63. Headings G1N and G1W. The load (e.g. railway vehicles) on a weighbridge is measured by means of a plurality of load cells which may be electric strain gauges. To prevent horizontal load on the load cells the weighbridge rests on a stabilizing frame 2 (Fig. 3) which comprises longitudinal check bars 20 and lateral check bars 21 supported at their middles on a base 4 by supports 22, 23 and welded at their ends to corner plates 24. A load cell assembly 3 (Fig. 4) is interposed between each corner plate and the base 4 and comprises a load cell 30 in a housing 31 which is welded to the bottom of a corner plate 24. A stem 33 of each load cell has a convex top surface and seats in a socket 39 of the respective corner plate while the bottom of the cell rests on a steel ball. This is to prevent horizontal loading of the cell which might result from changes in the length of the check bars due to temperature variations. The housings 31 are spaced from the base 4 and are lined with thermal insulation 56, 57, which may be fibreglass. The check bars 20, 21 are of such a thickness that their own weight over the length of their span will cause a downward deflection at their ends in excess of the vertical movement of the load cells and thus the bars will offer no resistance to the load such as would affect the load measurement.
