Abstract

The invention comprises reactive dyes of formula <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/1> wherein D and D1 are radicals of the same or different water-soluble azo, anthraquinone, nitro or phthalocyanine dyes having the indicated nitrogen atom attached to a carbon atom of the dyestuff radical, R, R1, R2, R3, R4 R5 are independently hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups, A is a direct link or a divalent organic linking group, P is an alkylene, arylene or substituted arylene radical, Q is any substituent and Z is an acyl radical which contains an acyl radical capable of reaction with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose with formation of a covalent bond. Specified acyl radicals include the radicals of acrylic, a -chloro-acrylic, propiolic, maleic, mono-and di-chloromaleic, chloroacetic, b -chloro- or bromo-propionic and a ,b -dichloro-propionic acids. Preferred acyl radicals are triazine and pyrimidine residues containing as reactive groups chlorine and bromine atoms; sulphonic acid, thiocyano, negatively substituted aryloxy or arylthio groups; groups of formula:- <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/2> wherein Y completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring which may be substituted or form part of a fused ring system; quaternary ammonium or pyridinium groups; groups of formula:- <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/3> wherein R6 and R7 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups or together with the nitrogen atom a 5- or 6-membered ring; and groups of formula:- <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/4> wherein R8 and R9 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups. The dyes are prepared by reacting a compound of formula:- <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/5> with an equimolar proportion of an acid halide or anhydride of an acid which contains a group capable of reaction with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose fibre to form a covalent bond. Dyes containing as group Q a radical of formula:- <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/6> are obtained by obtaining a dye of formula <FORM:1017271/C4-C5/7> with 2 moles of the acid halide or anhydride. The dyes may be used to colour natural and artificial textile materials such as wool, silk, polyamide, polyester and polyacrylonitrile fibres and especially cellulose fibres to which the dyes are applied in conjunction with an acid-binding agent. The dyes may also be applied together with a resin-forming composition as described in Specification 846,505. The preparation of the dyes if described in examples.
