Abstract

Cellulosic materials are creaseproofed by cross-linking the free hydroxy groups of the cellulosic material with a cross-linking agent comprising epichlorohydrin or a compound which is converted to epichlorohydrin in the presence of a strong base which has a pH of at least 10 as a 1% by weight aqueous solution, the cross-linking reaction being conducted while the material has uniformly distributed therein, calculated on the total weight of fabric, 1-15% total moisture and from 0.25% to (4R + 2)% strong base, calculated as NaOH, in which R is the number of hydroxyl groups of the NaOH consumed by the cross-linking agent during the cross-linking reaction, and the material containing moisture, strong base and cross-linking agent being maintained in a desired configuration at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. until the cross-linking reaction has taken place. The strong base may be sodium or potassium hydroxide, trimethylphenyl ammonium hydroxide, an alkali metal sulphide or an alkali metal silicate, and suitable cross-linking agents which are converted to epichlorohydrin in the presence of the strong base are 1, 3 dichloropropanol-2 and 2, 3-dichloropropanol-1. The fabric may be treated with an emulsion comprising the cross-linking agent, strong base and water or the cross-linking agent may be applied separately from the water and strong base in either order. The fabric is preferably a 1-4% by weight aqueous solution of NaOH, squeezed to a solution pick up of 30-130% by weight to provide 0.5-6% by weight NaOH on the fabric, dried at a temperature not exceeding 100 DEG C. to a moisture content of 1-15%, treated with the cross-linking agent which may be mixed with methanol and maintained in a polyethylene encased smooth roll at a temperature up to 100 DEG C. while the cross-linking reaction takes place. The fabric may be treated with a polyethylene softener either before or after cross-linking and the treating solution may also contain starch. Woven, knitted or non-woven fabrics comprising cotton, linen, jute, flax, viscose rayon, including polynosic rayons, cellulose ester or cellulose ether fibres alone or in admixture with polyester, nylon or polyacrylic fibres may be treated.
