Abstract

1,017,033. Magnetic tape; Hall effect. AMPEX CORPORATION. Dec. 17, 1963 [Dec. 26, 1962], No. 49797/63. Heading G5R, [Also in Division H1] To play back a tape recorded normally, without using a conventional playback head, the tape 20 includes a Hall-effect material in its ferromagnetic layer. A control current 22 is applied between longitudinally-spaced wipers (or rollers) 24 and an e.m.f. output results across transversely spaced electrodes 26. The active tape layer (see Division H1) may comprise ferric oxide and InSb or InAs as a mixture, or layers (Figs. 1, 2 respectively, not shown) or a nickel, cobalt or nickel-cobalt layer with combined ferromagnetic and Hall-effect properties (Fig. 3, not shown).
