Abstract

In winding filamentary materials when there are short-term variations in the peripheral speed of the package of the winding-point, the tension is controlled to form packages of uniform tension and low defect level by applying to the yarn an inertial force of \sB 3 gms to \sB 30 gms. This force may be applied by passing the material over one or more rotary members having a total rotary moment of inertia not exceeding 15 gm. cm2. Such a member may comprise a disc fixed to which are felt rings between fixed and slidable plates latter being urged towards the adjacent ring by a adjustable spring 15. In another form, a drum rotatable on a fixed shaft carries a felt disc, the position of the shaft relative to a fixed bearing-surface being adjustable. Two rotary members as described may be used in combination the axes of the members being relatively inclined.
