Abstract

Carboxylates of palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, osmium, iridium and platinum used in the non-aqueous liquid phase preparation of alkenyl esters from ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, optionally in the presence of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal carboxylate, are regenerated from the process by treatment with molecular oxygen or oxygen containing gas in the presence of nitric acid or an inorganic nitrate and a carboxylic acid. Ferric nitrate is preferred and promotors e.g. salts of iron, copper, cobalt, vanadium, cerium, tin, aluminium, boron, magnesium, and zinc, particularly the acetates, propionates and pivalates, and nitrogen dioxide may be present. Alkali metal and alkaline earth metal halides, e.g. lithium and sodium chlorides may also be present. The regeneration is preferably carried out in the alkenyl ester preparation reaction mixture and active carriers such as molecular sieves, pumice, aluminas and activated carbons may be added. Examples describe the regeneration of palladium from the reaction mixture derived from a vinyl acetate preparation.
