Abstract

1,016,540. Rotary-piston internal combustion engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. Dec. 4, 1964 [Dec. 7, 1963], No. 49420/64. Heading F1F. A rotary-piston I.C. engine of trochoidal type includes an axial seal comprising an oilscraper ring 7, Fig. 1, disposed in an annular groove 5 in the end wall 2 of the piston 3 and secured to one limb 9 of a metal bellows 11 whose other limb 10 is secured in the groove 5 non-rotatively with respect to the piston and a preliminary scraper ring 8 bearing against the inner peripheral surface of the ring 7. The rings are pressed independently of each other into sealing contact with the housing side wall 4, the ring 7 by the bellows and spring means 14 and the ring 8 by spring means 18. Oil which passes the ring 8 is collected in chambers formed by bores 16 between the sealing faces 20, 15 of the rings 8, 7 respectively and discharged by inwardly directed acceleration faces through ports 21 in the housing side wall 4. In a modification, the sealing face 15 may be replaced by an insert of ceramic material or by graphite or sintered materials. The bellows 11 may be shaped to act as a spring in which case the spring means 14 are dispensed with. The chambers in which the oil is collected may instead of being formed in the ring 7 may be formed in the ring 8 and comprise annular chambers disposed radially one outside the other and subdivided into separate chambers by radial ribs. The ring 8 is then provided with driving lugs engageable with complementary grooves in the piston so that the ring 8 rotates with the piston and the oil may again be collected by means of ports in the housing side wall.
