Abstract

1,016,139. Coiling yarn. TURBO MACHINE CO. Dec. 7, 1962 [Jan. 4, 1962; May 21,1962], No. 46221/62. Headings D1F and D1T. In apparatus for continuously deforming multi- or mono-filament yarn by projecting the yarn through the nip of two feed rolls into a space bounded solely by two plane opposed guide surfaces and against a mass of coiled yarn held frictionally between the surfaces, at least one of the rolls has a diameter of between <SP>1</SP>/l6 in. and “ in, and the guide surfaces are spaced from one another by a distance not more than about the radius of the rolls, or of the roll having the smaller diameter. It is stated that the small roll diameter and thus the relatively large distance between the surfaces of the rolls at a fixed point downstream of the roll nip allows the yarn to be formed into helical coils rather than into saw toothed crimps when it meets the accumulated mass of crimped yarn. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 yarn Y passes through tensioning device D, and ceramic guide pins 30, 31 or other guide means to ensure that the yarn reaches rolls 1, 2 at the same axial point. The coiled yarn is passed to a container preparatory to further treatment including either batch or continuous heat setting treatment followed by a tensioning operation adapted to repeatingly extend and relax the filaments so that the coils of one filament become out of phase with respect to the other filaments. The shaft 3 of the roll 1 is mounted in bearings in a leaf 6 swingable on a shaft 7 and adjustably spring pressed against the main housing 8 by a spring 26 on a screw 24. The restrictor guides 40, 41 are yieldingly supported on leaft springs 42, 43 controlled by screws 44, and 45 so that knife edges 46, 47 engage the rolls. Leaf spring 42 is mounted on a segmental plate 33 angularly adjustable with respect to roll 2 so that the distance between guides 40, 41 can be adjusted. In the embodiment of Fig. 9 there are several coiling devices mounted side by side, Fig. 6 (not shown) and having common feed rolls 101, 102. The yarns pass over plates 153, Fig. 6, heated by infra red lamps or other means to the curling clips 120. The coiled yarn then passes between endless belts 200, 201, Fig; 8 (not shown), mounted on rollers which are adjustably mounted to vary the pressure on the yarn, and from thence to a receptacle or heating chamber. Each clip 120 is mounted on a shouldered rod 127 and has spring pressed bars 123, 124 flucrumed at 129. The rolls 101, 102 are rotated by a plurality of partly intermeshing discs mounted on rolls 162-165, Fig. 12 (not shown), in a housing 110. Antifriction bearings of one roll 165 are mounted in movable supports which are adjustably spring urged so that the pressure on the rolls 101, 102 can be varied and so that by means of a lever the roll 165 can be lowered to remove rolls 101, 102.
