Abstract

<PICT:1016127/C4-C5/1> Organic compounds such as hydrocarbons are dehydrogenated by reaction with oxygen and a metal iodide such as arsenic, antimony, lead, zinc, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, manganese, calcium, cerium or particularly lithium iodide. Lithium iodide containing some lithium hydroxide enters reactor 10 at 12 and air enters at 14, plus some water at 13. The lithium iodide reacts with oxygen at 621 DEG C., releasing iodine which then reacts with hydrocarbons entering at 15 to form hydriodic acid. The latter reacts with lithium hydroxide forming lithium iodide and water, and the reacted mixture leaves at 16. Metal ports of reactor 10 are cooled to maintain a frozen protective layer of lithium iodide thereon.
