Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a device for connecting a service pipe of rigid plastics material to a gas main 2 formed from a similar material there is a cutting tool having a screw-threaded part 28 which is engageable with an internal screw-thread 30 formed in the extension 8 of the device or in a plug 29 inserted in the extension, and the cutting tool is adapted to cut a hole in the main as the screw-threaded part thereof is screwed along the screw-thread 30 or the plug. The shank of the cutter may be formed with an axial passage through which extends a rod having a gimlet end for screwing into the wall of the main before the cutting operation is carried out and to allow the disc cut from the wall of the main to be extracted with the cutter when the shank of the cutter is provided with a screw-thread which is engaged with the screw-threaded bore of the plug 29, the pitch of the external screw-thread of the plug is greater than that of the bore thereof. The cutter also has an internal screw-thread 27 so that as the cutter is rotated the disc cut from the wall of the main is drawn into and removed with the cutting head.
