Abstract

Cyclobutane - 1,2 - dicyanide is chlorinated with molecular chlorine to give one or more of the compounds (i) 1-chloro-1,2-dicyanocyclobutane, (ii) 1,2-dichloro-1,2-dicyanocyclobutane and (iii) 1,2-dicyanocyclobut-1-ene. Hydrogen chloride may be added to the reaction mixture and the reaction may be carried out in a chlorinated hydrocarbon as solvent. The invention also comprises compounds (i) and (iii) above. The reaction proceeds to give compound (i) as the first product, which compound gives compound (iii) on heating, and the latter compound gives compound (ii) by addition of chlorine; the relative proportions of compounds (i), (ii) and (iii) at the end of the reaction are dependent upon the reaction conditions used. Examples are given.ALSO:The compounds (i) 1-chloro-1, 2-dicyanocyclobutane, (ii)1, 2-dichloro-1, 2-dicyanocyclobutane, and (iii) 1, 2-dicyanocyclobut-1-ene (see Division C2) are useful as nematocides. They may be applied to a nematode containing soil in conventional manners such as in a solvent or mixed with a solid carrier such as clay.
