Abstract

1,015,316. Gas holders of variable capacity. DAVIES BROS. (DENTON) Ltd. Nov. 23, 1964 [Nov. 26, 1963], No. 46569/63. Heading F4X. Means for preventing freezing of the seals of a water-sealed gas-holder comprises a pump 18 having an inlet 20 connected to an inlet pipe 21 with horizontal portion 22 below the surface of water in the seal, and an outlet 23 connected to a housing 24, provided with one or more electric heating elements 27, the top of the housing being connected to a pipe 25 with horizontal outlet portion 26. In operation, water is drawn from the seal through the portion 22 and discharged to the housing 24 where it is heated before being passed back to the seal through the portion 26. The pump may be mounted on a flange at the upper edge of the lift adjacent each seal (see Fig. 2, not shown), or submerged in the relatively warm water in the centre of the tank forming the lowermost seal. The arrangement may be thermostatically controlled.
