Abstract

[Also in Divisions A3, F2 and H2] A retractable safety belt comprises a spring- loaded reel, an inertia sensitive mass which actuates locking means in response to deceleration, lateral acceleration, rolling or spinning of the vehicle and an electromagnetic or hydraulic device operable by an inertia sensitive or manual switch or valve for moving the mass to engage and operate the locking means independently of its momentum or inertia. The reel 10 for a belt 17 has a brake element 45 non- rotatably slidable on a sleeve 47 on the reel spindle 11 and spaced from a flange 10b on the reel, by a spring 26. At a predetermined deceleration or the like of the vehicle an inertia switch (see Division H2) completes a circuit for an armature 24 which moves a ring-shaped inertia mass 44 and brake element 45 axially to bring dog teeth 22 and 19 on the brake element and flange into locking engagement to arrest the reel. An inertia sensitive valve may control the hydraulic operation of the brake in the form of a plunger. The inertia switches may control a number of reels. In the event of a failure of the power supply each device is mounted so that the inertia of the armature assists the inertia mass to cause the reel to be arrested as the result of rapid deceleration or the like of the vehicle.
