Abstract
1,014,674. Book trimming machines. R. D. H. THOMPSON & CO. Ltd. Feb. 25, 1963 [Nov. 23, 1961], No. 7558/63. Divided out of 1,014,671. Heading B4B. A machine for trimming piles of paper sheets or books comprises a knife formed of two parallel blades 2 adapted to define two opposite cut edges of the piles of books, a face-plate 11, a ram 12, and means 13 to remove a cut pile or book, the ram and either the face-plate or the knife being reciprocable in the direction of cut, so that when the piles or books are fed in turn to the face-plate one pile or book is only partially cut, as the knife remains spaced from the face-plate, and this pile or book is held between the blades while a further pile or book is fed into the machine. The knife comprises two parallel blades 3 and a third blade 5 set back from the blades 3. In operation, a book 14a rests against the face-plate 11 and a book 14c is ejected by the pusher 13. The face-plate 11 is moved until the book 14b which was previously partially cut by the blades 3 bears against the book 14a and the ram 12 is then moved against the books 14d and the pile of books compressed. The face-plate 11 is then moved under high pressure towards the knife assembly so that the blades 3 partially cut through the book 14a and complete the cutting of the book 14b, the blade 5 also cutting on the third side of the latter book. When the face-plate 11 has reached the end of its stroke the ram 12 is withdrawn and the face-plate 11 is moved away from the knife which retains the book 14a; a further book is placed between the book 14a and the face-plate, and the book 14d is ejected by the pusher. The cutting edge 5 is curved at its ends to permit cutting of rounded corners.
