Abstract

1,014,498. Purifying exhaust gases. AUTOMOBILES M. BERLIET. Oct. 23, 1962 [Oct. 23, 1961], No. 40000/62. Heading F1B. An exhaust gas purifier comprises two consecutive filters 7, 8, adapted to remove particles of different sizes from the gases, at least the first filter 7 being a catalytic converter. The filters 7, 8, are formed between cylindrical walls 9, 10, 11, of metal gauze closed by an end plate 16, the gases entering at 2 and flowing outwardly through the filters 7, 8, to an outlet chamber 18. The filter 7 is formed by particles of alumina, of a diameter from 1À5 to 5 mm, impregnated with cobalt oxide and the filter 8 may be formed either by particles of the same material as filter 7 but smaller diameter of from 0À2 to 1À5 mm. or by fibres of a diameter of 3 to 15 microns comprising alumina, silicon oxide and zirconium oxide. The partitions 9 . . 10 are carried by a cruciform support 12 fastened to a removable end plate 4. The filter member may be parallelepipedic instead of cylindrical. Catalysts. The support material for the catalyst 7 may alternatively be aluminium silicate or zirconium oxide and the active material may be an oxide of an element of Group I, V, VI, VII or VIII of the periodic system e.g. copper, vanadium, chromium, menganese, nickel, iron, platinum or silver or the carbonate or chloride of potassium, sodium or copper.
