Abstract

[Also in Division B7] In a device for handling oil or tar barrels (see Division B7), a lifting cradle is formed by three telescopic radial arms 16, 17, 18 in which are slidable three tubes 40 which clampingly engage the end-rim of a barrel 10. The barrel is rotatably supported when tilted by rollers 104 mounted on a trolley unit 2. The arms 16, 17, 18 radiate from a tubular spindle 15 which carries a suspension ring 21 for raising of the barrel by a pulley block or crane, and which supports a ratchet wheel engageable by a spring- loaded pawl 32, 30 slidable in a guide tube 28 on a tube 27. The pawl 32 may engage the ratchet wheel so that the barrel 10 can be rotated in either direction on the rollers 104 by means of a handle 26, or so that the handle 26 may freewheel in one direction only about the barrel 10, or be disengaged from the ratchet wheel so that the handle may rotate freely in either direction about the barrel. The arms 16, 17, 18 are connected by links 58, 57, 56 to a centrallypivoted triangular plate 51 so that a displacement of one arm or tube causes a similar displacement in the other two. In one embodiment of the clamping means carried by the tubes 40, Fig. 6 (not shown), each tube 40 carries at its outer end a fixed perpendicular jaw engaging the inside of the sidewall end of the barrel, and a second jaw carried by a tube slidable in the tube 40 by means of a knob, engaging the outside of the sidewall end and fitting under an end flange of the sidewall, the second jaw being lockable. In another embodiment of the clamping means, Fig. 7 (not shown), a rod passing through the tube 40 near its outer end, carries a fixed jaw at one end and at the other end a lever-rotated cam. The cam bears on one end of a spring-loaded lever pivoted near its centre and carrying at its other end a displaceable jaw engageable under the end flange of the sidewall of the barrel.
