Abstract

101,410. Allen, C. C. Sept. 7, 1915, [Convention date]. Piston packing -A packing-ring for the piston of a steam or gas engine or pump is made from a portion of a helix with overlapping ends 11, 12, Fig. 3. The blank may be cast, or may be cut from a helix formed by cutting a cylinder on a helical line. The overlapping ends are recessed, and the end 12 is then sprung under the end 11 until the recesses engage, the torsion serving to keep the parts in contact. The ends may merely overlap, as shown in Fig. 8, or may be recessed both axially and radially, as shown in Fig. 6. Clearance is left at the ends, as shown, to allow contraction.
