Abstract

Condensation polymers of good thermal stability are obtained by heating a cyclic aroxylhalophosphonitrile, PnNnXx(OR)y Wherein each X is F, Cl or Br; R is an aryl or substituted aryl group; n is an integer from 3 to 17 and x and y are integers such that x+y=2n and 2\sEx<y, with an organic polyhydroxy compound in the presence of a hydrogen halide acceptor. A precondensate is first formed at 100 DEG to 250 DEG C. or at the boiling point of a high boiling solvent and may be converted to the fully cured polymer by heating to 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. The precondensate may be purified by solvent extraction. The aroxyhalophosphonitriles may be prepared as described in Specification 1,013,463. Preferred polyhydroxy compounds are polyhydric phenols and fluorinated aliphatic polyalcohols, many examples of these and other polyols being given. The precondensate or a solution thereof may be used to form a laminate or impregnate a porous material and is then cured in situ. In examples cyclic tetraphenoxydichlortriphosphonitrile is condensed with (1) diphenylolpropane, (2) hydroquinone, (3) 1,5-dihydroxynaphthalene, and (4) 2,2,3,3,4,4-hexafluoropentane-1,5,diol and cyclic tetra-)beta-naphthoxy)-dichlortriphosphonitrile is condensed with (5) diphenylpropane and (6) hydroquinone.
