Abstract

[Also in Division F4] A nuclear reactor core and associated heat exchanger are housed in a single container, and the heat exchanger is in the form of units each comprising two parallel headers between which are connected a parallel array of tubular elements; each tubular element comprises two coils, one encircling each header, joined in series; the headers are arranged circumferentially round an annular chamber surrounding the core. The reactor is of the pressurized water type utilizing forced circulation between the core and heat exchangers, the pumps being mounted in thimbles in the top closure member of the pressure vessel. Water in the heat exchange unit flows outwards from one of the headers 45 in a spiral formed from two tubes 46; it is then passed to two further tubes 46 in which it flows inwards in a rotationally opposite sense, to discharge into the second header 45. The spirals forming each parallel pass lie in a common plane perpendicular to the headers. The units are designed to permit the plugging of the ends of a faulty tubular element, by means of plug inserting devices which can be positioned within the headers.
