Abstract

A ferrous metal article having an insoluble manganese phosphate coating thereon is treated with an acidic aqueous solution of a stannous salt, e.g. the chloride, in the presence of metallic lead suspended therein. The solution may initially contain also a lead salt such as lead chloride in amount from 0.2-100% of the weight of the stannous salt present. A preferred range of concentrations of stannous chloride is 10-500 grams of SnCl2.2H2O per litre. The solution may also contain a water-soluble polyhydroxy aliphatic acid or the lactone thereof, e.g. tartaric acid in amount of 0.5 grams per litre.
