Abstract
A lubricant composition comprises a major proportion of a liquid lubricating oil and 0.002-15% of a composition which comprises an oil-soluble alkaline earth neutralized hydrolysate of the product of the reaction of a phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon mixture of 40-90% of low molecular weight polymer of a mono-olefine containing less than 6 C atoms and 10-60% of solvent extracted hydrocarbon lubricant oil, and a boron compound in sufficient quantity to provide a composition of lower viscosity. An additive concentrate for lubricating oils comprises a lubricating oil containing more than 15% of the above polymeric composition which may also contain zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate as a complexing agent. The lubricating oil may be mineral polyolefines, alkylene oxides or polycarboxylic acid esters.ALSO:A composition comprises an oil-soluble alkaline earth neutralized hydrolysate of the product of the reaction of a phosphorus sulphide with a hydrocarbon mixture of 40-90% of low molecular weight polymer of a monoolefine containing less than 6 C atoms and 10-60% of solvent extracted hydrocarbon lubricant oil, and a boron compound in sufficient quantity to provide a composition of lower viscosity. The olefines may be ethylene, propylene or butenes or propane/propene or butane/butylene mixtures and the polymers may have a molecular weight of 300-10,000. The composition may be prepared by reacting a phosphorus sulphide, e.g. pentasulphide, with the above hydrocarbon mixture in a ratio of 10-25% sulphide based on the hydrocarbon at above 100 DEG F. to form the phosphosulphurized product which is then hydrolysed, e.g. with steam at 200-500 DEG F. and the hydrolysate is neutralized with a basic alkaline earth compound, e.g. barium or calcium oxide, in the presence of boric acid or B2\O3, water and a e.g. C1- 4, alkanol and the water and alkanol is removed. The composition may contain 0.05-0.5 mol. B/mol. P.
