Abstract

Polypropylene is made by polymerizing propylene with a catalyst comprising (1) a compound selected from Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W, Th, U, Fe, Co, and Ni, and (2) a separately prepared complex of an alkali metal, an alkali metal phosphide, nitride, arsenide, stibide, or mixture, with an organozinc or an organoaluminium compound. The catalyst may also include as a third component, a compound having at least one hydrocarbonamino group, attached to a silicon atom, a compound having at least one hydrocarbonamino group attached to a titanium atom, or a hydrocarbon phosphorus compound, The Specification contains extensive lists of catalyst components. The polymerization is effected in an inert diluent, and the polymer recovered by known "low-pressure" techniques, e.g. treatment with water, steam, alcohols, acids, ammonia, sodium hydroxide, ethanolamine, citric acid, or ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid. Hydrogen may be present during the polymerization. Exemplified catalysts are (1) an Al(C2H5)3 and Na complex, TiCl4 reduced with Al, and tetrakis-(dimethylamino) silane, (2) As (1) but in which complex is diethylzinc and Na, (3) as (1) but in which the silane is replaced by a tributyl phosphorus solution (4) an Al(C2H5)2Cl and N9 complex, TiCl4 reduced with Al, and tributyl phosphorus, and (5) a complex of Al(C2H5)3 and trisodium phosphide, TiCl4 reduced with Al, and tributyl phosphorus, and (6) a complex of Li and Al(C2H5)3, TiCl4 reduced with Al, and tetrakis-(dimethylamino)-silane.
