Abstract

A release valve comprises a closure member 11 mounted on a piston 13 in a cylinder 14 adapted for connection to the main brake pipe in railway braking equipment, a first chamber 5 adapted for connection with the pneumatic circuit of the equipment, a second chamber 18 always vented to atmosphere and separable from the first chamber by the closure member which has a larger diameter than the piston on which it is mounted, such that in operation the open or shut condition of the closure member is dependent on the combined pressures in the chamber 5 and cylinder 14. To empty the chambers which control the brakes, the latter having been applied to the maximum so that atmospheric pressure is present in cylinder 14, the control rod 21 is moved obliquely to move the closure member upwards off its seat 12. The chambers then vent to atmosphere through calibrated orifice 27. Even though the pressure in chamber 18 is lower than in chamber 5 it is sufficient to maintain the closure member off its seat when the rod 21 is returned to its normal position by spring 22 because it is acting on a greater surface area of the closure member. When the brake pipe is charged the control rod 21 must be held actuated as long as the venting is to continue.
