Abstract
Cellular synthetic resins may be produced by extruding at a temperature from 70 DEG to 200 DEG C. a heat plastified mixture of (a) a thermoplastic vinyl chloride polymer, (b) a stabilizing agent for the vinyl chloride polymer, (c) from 5% to 60% by weight, based on the combined weight with the vinyl chloride polymer of a resinous copolymer of a major amount of a monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbon with a minor amount of acrylonitrile and (d) from 5 to 25 parts by weight, based on the weight of the polymeric materials of a diphatic or cycloaliphatic halogen-substituted hydrocarbon boiling at a temperature not higher than 40 DEG C. at 760 mm. absolute pressure. The vinyl chloride polymer is preferably polyvinyl chloride but copolymers of vinyl chloride with e.g. vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, ethyl acrylate, methyl acrylate or vinylidene chloride may be used. Suitable stabilizing agents are sulphur containing organotin compounds, basic lead salts, cadmiumbarium soaps of fatty acids and liquid zinc organic complexes. The monovinyl aromatic hydrocarbons that may be used include styrene, vinyl toluene, vinylxylene, ethyl vinylbenzene, isopropylstyrene, tert.-butyl styrene, diethylvinylbenzene or diisopropylstyrene in amounts of preferably from 65-75% by weight of the resinous copolymer. Suitable blowing agents are methyl chloride, methyl bromide, ethyl chloride, ethyl bromide, dichloro-difluoromethane, trichlorofluoromethane, 2,2 - difluoropropane or perchlorofluorocarbons of the formula CCl2F.CCl2F, CClF2.CCl2F, CClF2.CClF2, CF3.CClF2, <FORM:1009100/C3/1> Small amounts of additives such as pigments, dyes, lubricants, plasticizers or anti-oxidants may also be incorporated. The expanded products may be used for insulation for cold chambers, scouring pads, crash pads, floats or porous membranes.
