Abstract
Dispersions of polymers in organic liquids are made by polymerizing at least one vinylidene monomer in an organic liquid in which the resulting polymer is insoluble and in which there is dissolved a poly-(vinyl C1-C4 alkyl ether) which undergoes reaction with the monomer or polymer produced therefrom to form a dispersant for the polymeric particles. Preferred monomers are vinyl esters, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, styrene, vinyl toluene, and acrylic and methacrylic acids and their anhydrides, esters, nitriles and amides. The organic liquid is preferably an alcohol, hydrocarbon, ether, ketone, ester or halogenated hydrocarbon. Polymerization may be carried out by free-radical, anionic or cationic methods. The resulting dispersions are used as coating compositions. The examples describe the free radical polymerization by the above process of: (1) methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate in the presence of poly-(vinyl ethyl ether), (2) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid in the presence of poly-(vinyl isobutyl ether), (3) methyl methacrylate and ethyl and 2-ethylhexyl acrylates in the presence of poly-(vinyl ethyl ether), (4) methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methacrylamide in the presence of poly-(vinyl isobutyl ether), (5) vinyl chloride in the presence of poly-(vinyl ethyl ether), (6) vinyl acetate in the presence of poly (vinyl ethyl ether), (7 methyl methacrylate, styrene and ethyl acrylate in the presence of poly-(vinyl methyl ether), and (8) acrylonitrile and n-butyl acrylate in the presence of poly-(vinyl ethyl ether).ALSO:Surfaces of glass, wood and metal are coated with dispersions in organic liquids of polymers obtained by polymerizing one or more vinylidene monomers in organic liquids which are non-solvents for the resulting polymers and in which there are dissolved poly(vinyl C1-C4 alkyl ethers) which undergo reaction with the monomer or polymer produced therefrom to form a dispersant for the polymer particles (see Division C3). The examples describe coating (1) glass and metal plates with a poly(vinyl methyl ether) stabilized mineral spirits dispersion of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, (2) glass with a poly(vinyl isobutyl ether) stabilized dispersion in octane of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and acrylic acid, (3) aluminium and steel by flow-coating with a poly(vinyl ethyl ether) stabilized mineral spirits dispersion of a methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate copolymer, (4) glass, metal and wood with a poly(vinyl isobutyl ether) stabilized dispersion in naphtha of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and methacrylamide, (7) glass and metal plates with a poly(vinyl methyl ether) stabilized dispersion in isopropyl alcohol of a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and styrene, and (8) copper wire by dipping with a poly(vinyl ethyl ether) stabilized dispersion in methyl ethyl ketone of a copolymer of acrylonitrile and n-butyl acrylate. The coating compositions may also include drying oils, asphalt, natural resins, or alkyd, epoxy, aminoplast or coumarone-indene resins, and may be cured by baking. They may also be applied to ceramics, bricks, stones, plaster or vinyl or asphalt tiles.
