Abstract

1,008,650. Grinding. HERBERT LINDNER G.m.b.H. & CO. Sept. 30, 1964 [Oct. 3, 1963], No. 39834/64. Heading B3D. A method of trueing a profiled grinding wheel 1 for generating a thread comprises moving a trueing diamond 3 in a path which is parallel to a rectilinear main flank line of the profile and inclined relative to the axis of symmetry of the profile, and generating the profile flanks by superimposing on said movement feeding movements at right angles to the main flank line. In a machine for carrying out the method, the profile is trued simultaneously by two diamonds 3, 4 connected to pistons 51 slidable in cylinders in holders 49, the movement of the pistons being in directions at right angles to the main flank lines. The holders 49 are carried by rods 34, 35 which are slidable in segments 71, 72 adjustable by worms 73, 74 so that the direction of movement of the holders is parallel to the main flank lines. The holders are formed with racks 32, 33 which engage separate gears 31, 31<SP>1</SP> rotatable about a common axis in opposite directions by gearing 28, 29, 29<SP>1</SP>, 30, 31<SP>1</SP> driven by the movement of a rack 27 on a holder 20 for a template 25. A pin 26 engages the template and is carried by a member 36 having two pistons 37, 38, each of which is connected by a separate line 42, 43, balancing cylinder 44, 45 and line 46, 47 to a space 48 in the cylinder of a tool holder 49. In operation, fluid pressure from a pump 62 is directed through a throttle valve 70 to a space 21 in a cylinder to move the holder 20 and template 25. the movement of the holder causes the gearing to move the rods 34, 35 upwardly so that the diamonds travel upwardly from the root to the crest of the profile. At the same time, fluid pressure is supplied by a line 64 to act on the pistons 37, 38 to urge the pin 26 against the template. As the pistons move inwardly under the control of the pin 26, the fluid pressure in the lines 42, 43, balancing cylinders 44, 45, and lines 46, 47 acts in the spaces 48 to move the diamonds 3, 4 at right angles to the main flank lines to form the profile on the grinding wheel. A counterpressure is supplied to the cylinders 20 and 48. At the end of the movement of the template holder 20, an abutment 54 actuates a switch 55 controlling electromagnetic reversing valves 56, 57 to reverse the fluid pressure connections so that the diamonds are withdrawn from the wheel and the template holder 20 and diamond holders 49 moved to their initial positions in which a further abutment 68 actuates a second switch 69 to reverse the valves 56, 57 for another truing operation.
