Abstract

Alkyl fluorides are prepared by reacting alkyl orthoformates and silicon tetrafluoride, preferably in the presence of a catalyst selected from aluminium chloride, aluminium fluoride, stannic chloride, boron trifluoride and titanic chloride. Ethyl fluoride is obtained in examples along with substantial amounts of ethyl formate.
