Abstract

A translucent, thin, colourless, flexible web comprises an organic fibrous material impregnated with a mixture of (a) a substantially colourless, flexible, inert, thermoplastic, non-tacky material which is resistant to oxidation and degradation in air at room temperatures and will flow under pressure at temperatures not exceeding 120 DEG C., and (b) at least one colourless acid-binding salt. The fibrous material may be tissue paper or a bondedfibre fabric, e.g. of polyethylene terephthalate, regenerated cellulose or superpolyamide. The polymer may be a polymer or copolymer of vinyl acetate, an alkyl acrylate, an alkyl alkacrylate or alkyl crotonate, or a plasticised ethyl-cellulose. The acid-binding salt may be sodium, potassium or magnesium acetate or propionate, a carbonate or basic carbonate of a metal of Group I or Group II of the Periodic Table or an amine salt of a lower fatty acid. Mixtures of two or more such substances may be used. The impregnation may be carried out by using an emulsion or solution of the thermoplastic material containing the acid-binding salt in dissolved or suspended form.
