Abstract

A method for the wet magnetic separation of comminuted ores containing paramagnetic particles comprises forming a thin layer of a liquid containing the ore, attracting the paramagnetic particles to the surface of the liquid and then removing them from the liquid in a surface current, the only relative movement between the particles and the liquid being the surface current and that caused by the magnetic field. The depth of the liquid layer is preferably about equal to the size of the largest particles in it. The apparatus comprises a conveyer belt which carries the liquid layer, either in discrete buckets 2 (Fig. 4, not shown) or on the conveyer itself with raised sides 21 with or without separating struts 20 (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown), means for attracting the particles to the surface magnetically and means for removing the particles so attracted. The magnetic force may be provided by a circular disc with or without annular ridges to concentrate the magnetic lines of force or may be a magnetic band crossing the conveyer.ALSO:A method for the wet magnetic separation of comminuted ores containing paramagnetic particles comprises forming a thin layer of a liquid containing the ore, attracting the paramagnetic particles to the surface of the liquid and then removing them from the liquid in a surface current, the only relative movement between the particles and the liquid being the surface current and that caused by the magnetic field.
