Abstract
1,007,375. Ducted fan propulsion units. E. R. DOAK. July 20, 1962, No. 28043/62. Heading F1J. An aircraft propulsion unit is rotatably carried at the wing tip of a vertical take-off aircraft and comprises a fan mounted in a duct 12 which carries a movable annular extension 13. The extension 13, which has a sharp leading edge 26, lies adjacent the duct 12 in high speed forward flight as shown in Fig. 2 and when the engine is rotated vertically rams 32 are operated to move the extension forwardly. A blunt frontal surface 16 is thereby presented to the airflow and at low speeds this type of surface provides additional aerodynamic thrust. In an alternative embodiment electrically operated screw jacks are used to move the extension (Fig. 7, not shown).
