A towed submersible barge comprises ballast tanks 4 and 5 having exhaust ports 6 and 7 respectively, air storage chambers 10 and 11 respectively connected to the tanks 4 and 5 through remotely controlled valves 8 and 9, a towing line 2 and control surfaces 3. The barge can be given a predetermined longitudinal inclination to increase its resistance to motion through the water.
