A heating apparatus using gaseous or liquid fuels has a combustion chamber in which compressional vibrations are produced by oscillating combustion and gas flues connected to the combustion chamber, the intermittent operation of the fuel burner being positively determined and independent of the natural frequency of the heating apparatus, compressed air for supporting combustion being supplied intermittently to the combustion chamber at a phase displaced from the phase of the intermittent fuel supply. A pump 5 delivers fuel through a line 6 to a burner 7 of a combustion chamber 9 surrounded by a tubular casing 13 and supplied with air by a blower 17 through check valve 18, air chamber 15 and radial inlets 11 in a cylindrical member 10. Inlets 11 act as chokes for the air supply and in conjunction with chamber 15 effect a phase displacement between the fuel and air supplies to combustion chamber 9. The part 19 of casing 13 forms a combustion gas channel and communicates with a flue gas chamber 21 formed by a casing 20 and a coiled sheet 23 of metal or ceramic material. The combustion and flue gas chambers are dimensioned so that their combined natural frequency is approximately equal to the fuel injection frequency controlled by the fuel pump, the pump being a single cylinder plunger type for liquid fuel or diaphragm type for gaseous fuel. The portion of chamber 21 extending beside combustion chamber 9 acts as a recuperator for heating the combustion air flowing between member 10 and casing 13. Heat is carried off externally from outer casing 20 for air heating or in a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), for heating a liquid. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), a single or several parallel connected tubes lead from the combustion chamber for heating purposes, the waste gases being returned to the flue gas chamber.
