Abstract

The chlorination of organic compounds which may be followed or accompanied by condensation, fission or dehydration is carried out by reacting compounds capable of undergoing said chlorination with an aryloxy-phosphorus trichloride of the general formula ArnO2PCl3 in which n is 1 or 2, as chlorination agent. The preferred compound is pyrocatechyl phosphorus trichloride and the reaction may be carried out in an organic medium. In examples, benzophenone is treated to produce diphenyl dichloromethane; 2-acetyl-mesitylene produces 2,4,6 - trimethyl - a - chlorostyrene; b - penta-acetyl - galactose produces a - chlorotetra-acetyl - galactose; chloroacetic acid produces chloroacetyl chloride; carbobenzoxyglycine produces 2,5-dioxo-oxazolidine; hydrocinnamic acid produces a -hydrindone; acetic anhydride produces acetyl chloride; butyl formate produces dichloromethyl butyl ether; benzoic acid butyl ester produces benzoyl chloride and butyl chloride; 2-ethoxy-1,3-benzodioxole produces dichloromethyl ethyl ether and dipyrocatechyl phosphorus monochloride; benzamide produces benzonitrile; phenyl acetic acid amide produces benzyl cyanide; benzoyl piperidine produces dichloropentane and benzoic acid; p-toluene-sulphonic acid produces p-toluene-sulphochloride; ethylene carbonate produces chloroformic acid b -chloroethyl ester; phenyl urethane produces phenyl isocyanate; n-butyl urethane produces n-butyl isocyanate; phenyl thiourethane produces phenyl isocyanate. Pyrocatechyl phosphorus trichloride is obtained by warming the oxychloride with phosphorus pentachloride.ALSO:Cyanuric chloride is produced by heating cyanuric acid with pyrocatechyl phosphorus trichloride at 180 DEG to 190 DEG C. for 12 hours.
