Abstract

A process for the manufacture of cellulose sponge comprises forming a mixture of a viscose, a pore-forming substance, cellulose fibres and sodium hydroxide in an amount which together with the sodium hydroxide present in the viscose gives a total concentration by weight, based on the weight of solution, which is within one unit of the percentage concentration necessary to cause maximum swelling of the fibres in the mixture and subsequently coagulating and regenerating the mixture to form a sponge structure. The fibre may be, for example, cotton ramie, jute or flax. Sodium sulphate or other water-soluble salts and gas-forming substances, e.g. aluminium powder are suitable pore-forming agents. After the regeneration the sponge is washed to remove the pore-former.
