Abstract

A shaped body for use as a core for casting metals or alloys is prepared by moulding a mixture of tricalcium silicate, or ingredients which will react on heating to form tricalcium silicate, and a binder or casting an aqueous slurry of ingredients which will react on heating to form tricalcium silicate and firing the formed shape at 1075-1125 DEG C. 10-80% by weight of inert refractory material, e.g. dead burned magnesia, beryllia, zircon, ground porcelain and alumina may be included in the mixture. The mixture may be shaped by isostatic pressing, injection moulding, compression and transfer moulding, extrusion and casting. The examples describe slip casting Wollastonite and plaster, injection moulding Wollastonite, calcium carbonate and polystyrene and pressing a mixture of Wollastonite, calcium carbonate, dead-burned magnesia and paraffin wax.
