Abstract

Odour precursors and colour formers are removed from an alcohol, having at least 4 carbon atoms and obtained by the hydrolysis of the reaction product of an aluminium trialkyl and oxygen, by treating the alcohol with an alkali metal hydroxide agent at 100-350 DEG C., the agent consisting of 0-90% of water, the remainder being an alkali metal hydroxide and being present in an amount sufficient to provide 0.1-5% by weight of alkali based on the alcohol. The process is particularly suitable for the treatment of C6-C18 alcohols e.g. n-hexyl alcohol, n-octanol, n-decyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, myristyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol.
