Abstract
Latices of butadiene homo- and copolymers are prepared by polymerizing butadiene alone or with a copolymerizable monomer, in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an alkali metal, an alkali metal alkyl compound or a metal organic complex compound as catalyst, mixing the hydrocarbon solution of the polymer formed with an aqueous solution of an emulsifier mixture comprising an anionic emulsifier and a non-ionic dispersing agent, emulsifying the dissolved polymer with the aqueous solution, removing the hydrocarbon solvent by distillation and recovering the polymer latex. Generally 2 to 10% by weight of the anionic emulsifier and 4 to 20% by weight of the non-ionic dispersing agent are used, based on the weight of the butadiene polymer. After polymerization the catalysts may be destroyed, e.g. with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acids, alcohols, amines or ketones. If the emulsion prepared contains more than 4% by weight of anionic emulsifier and more than 10% by weight of non-ionic dispersing agent, a polyhydroxy compound can be added to the emulsion before distillation, in quantities of 0.1% to 5.0% by weight based on the polymer used. Polyhydroxy compounds mentioned are alginates, methyl cellulose or reaction products of sugars with ethylene oxide. In the Examples: (1) polybutadiene is emulsified with potassium oleate and the reaction product of nonyl phenol with 7 mols. of ethylene oxide; (2) polybutadiene is emulsified, in the presence of methyl cellulose, with the sulphated reaction product of nonyl phenol with 30 mols. of ethylene oxide and with the non-sulphated reaction product; (3) a butadiene-isoprene copolymer is emulsified with lauryl sulphate and the reaction product of nonyl phenol with 15 mols. of ethylene oxide; (4) a butadiene-styrene copolymer is emulsified with the potassium salt of coconut oil fatty acids and hydroxyethylated oleyl alcohol and (5) a block copolymer of butadiene and styrene is emulsified with the potassium salt of abietic acid and hydroxyethylated abietic acid in the presence of sodium alginate.
