1,004,438. Cleaning fruit. B. ZAVALLONI. Jan. 16, 1964 [Oct. 22, 1962; April 23, 1963], Nos. 39967/62 and 16016/63. Heading A4C. A fruit cleaning and/or polishing machine, e.g. for apples, oranges or peaches, comprises a feed bed composed of helically grooved 6a feed rollers 6 mounted side-by-side and arranged to pass fruit therealong in an axial direction for treatment by overlying transverse roller brushes or polishes 21 rotatably mounted above the feed bed. Fruit is fed from a tray 8 to be carried by the rollers 6 to be dried beneath blowers 37, 38 prior to passage beneath the adjustably mounted brushes 21 and discharge to a tray 20. The transversely arranged brushes 21 are simultaneously adjusted in height by a lever 28 and are rotated in the direction indicated by a motor 19 which also rotates the feed rollers 6 in the same direction. The rollers 6 may be clad with a friction material such as bristle and are cleaned by longitudinally arranged scrapers. Additionally feed rollers may be located above the rollers 6 at the input end to aid initial propulsion of fruit. Preferred dimensions associated with the rollers 6 and brushes 21 are given.
